Treating Wounds At Home

There are people that don’t enjoy going to the emergency room to get patched up. Who does? There are many reasons for this which extends from embarrassment to fear. If you are the type of person that can handle self-patching, you should know exactly how to do it.

Firstly, you need to identify the type of wound. Different scratches and cuts require different care.

Scratches – these are the quickest healing sores. You need to wait for the liquid to clot so that you can apply a waterproof plaster over. You want to use a waterproof plaster because the plaster needs to stay on as long as possible to avoid any bacteria from entering your body. You might not need to add a plaster because of how quickly the skin heals.

Burns – If you ever get burned, the best way to treat it would be to apply a soothing gel. Cells have been damaged by the extreme heat and the skin is quite sensitive. Control the pain by either adding Aloe Vera products or aqueous creams.

Flesh Wounds – You might notice that these refuse to close up in short periods of time and often leave you with permanent scars. Before patching it up, you need to hold up the area which is bleeding above your head. This stops blood from escaping from that part of your body. Eventually, it should clot up and it will be safe to relax your body. Keep this wound open so that it can dry out. It’s also a good idea to gently pat antiseptic chemicals on whilst you are healing. Thereafter, put a bandage around the area so that you are protected from the skin breaking and give the wound a chance to heal. You need to free the area of any bacteria as much as possible.

Vein Hit – Perhaps you slip and fall, and end up on a piece of broken glass. Accidents happen so quickly. You never know what could happen. You need to apply as much pressure as you possibly can to this area. The more pressure you apply, the less blood will escape. Once again, you should hold this part of your body above your head so that not a lot of blood gets released. You will also need to apply ice to thicken the blood.

You need to see a doctor if any severe accidents happen or if you are unsure of how to treat the wound. Stitches are the quickest and easiest way to get patched up. Antiseptic chemicals and plasters can be found at any retailer or cash and carry wholesaler so it might be a good idea to keep some in stock for these eventualities. Hospitals usually make it a priority to get these chemicals for rapid treatment against bacteria.

The Health Benefits of Yoghurt

This is something recently added to my diet in the smoothies that have replaced a normal cereal breakfast. Used in conjunction with 5 or 6 different fruits and a small teaspoon of Manuka honey plus a stick of celery my gut is now singing and alive. Concerned about toxicity from an incorrect diet and worried by a recent report of fat in the pancreas (which can lead to cancer) it was essential to repair my body and release it from the toxins.

My research into yoghurt has confirmed the importance of it for the digestive system, although it is not essential. Being a dairy product it does not appear to hinder arthritis although further research into that side of it is required. It does, however, contain essential minerals, vitamins, and calcium, plus other goodies.

The first thing is about good bacteria in the gut. This product is usually made from bacteria which puts it in the status of probiotics, and most have heard that word before. The term ‘pro-biotics’ literally means ‘for living things’. By way of contrast ‘anti-biotic’ means ‘against living things’. The latter destroys bacteria and the former replaces it with the good ones.

It is also animal protein because it comes from milk. That means it has calcium, vitamins B2, B12, potassium and magnesium.

Calcium: is essential for bone mass, while it assists in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. It is, therefore, good for all age groups.

Potassium is essential for heart, kidneys, and other organs to function properly. Low potassium leads to a risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, infertility, and digestive disorders.

Magnesium helps keep the blood pressure normal and the heart rhythm steady along with healthy bones. Studies in the US show that people who do not have enough magnesium in their system are likely to have elevated inflammatory markers which are associated with heart disease, diabetes, and a risk of osteoporosis. People with high blood pressure can also be helped.

Since including it in my diet the benefits have shown up in many ways, including the good-feeling in my digestive tract. That means it is doing its job and there is nothing to be lost or which is adverse against it.

People who suffer from any of the above mentioned problems might like to do their own research into ways to improve their diet and increase the health benefits. Along with taking yoghurt on a daily basis I have included a gym membership for essential exercise and have removed refined sugar and salt from food wherever possible. Bread intake is also greatly reduced and sometimes not required at all.

How Important Are Enzymes For Good Health?

The majority of people have probably never even heard the word ‘enzymes’ and so they are ignorant of what they are and their purpose in the body. There are three types required for life. They are metabolic, digestive, and food enzymes. Their function will be dealt with in this article. The point to remember is that without them there can be no life and while we are ignorant of their function the spike in preventable diseases increases.

METABOLIC ENZYMES

These are produced in the pancreas and are essential for keeping our blood, tissues, and organs healthy. Their purpose is to remove toxins from the body along with old dead material from the cells. That means they play an important role in aging but as bodies mature they produce less of this substance, allowing for development of diseases, loss of bone density, and wrinkles.

The pancreas also produces the hormones insulin and glucagon. They work together to regulate blood sugar which, when normal, allows oxygen and nutrient to travel efficiently throughout the body. This is also where digestive enzymes are manufactured.

Best Foods for this enzyme are:

a) Bananas, kiwi, grapes, papaya, and so on

b) Raw honey

c) Extra virgin olive oil

d) Avocado

e) Dates

f) Raw oils

g) Sprouts

DIGESTIVE ENZYMES

These are essential to break down foods so nutrients can be absorbed into the blood stream for healthy body functions. Most people would have heard of this but not the reasons why they are essential for health. Food is broken down into nutrients that include amino acids, fatty acids, cholesterol, and simple sugars, but that is only the start of the process. Vitamins, minerals, and compounds from plants and animal food have to be extracted.

This is where the digestive enzymes play their part. Aside from those contained in saliva and the stomach the main source is the pancreas. There are many things that hinder production of this vital part of the system and when they are mal-functioning here are some of the symptoms to watch for:

a) Gas and bloating after eating

b) Feeling like there is a rock in the gut

c) A full sensation after only a few bites

d) Undigested food in stools

e) Floating stools

f) Undigested fat in the toilet.

FOOD ENZYMES

Plant enzymes actually start digesting foods before the body’s system begins working. They enhance the digestion process and deliver nutrients to the blood even if the digestive system is non functional. What is not known is that they are killed at temperatures above 115 degrees Fahrenheit. As people usually cook their food the essential elements may be missing from them.

The thing to note is that food enzymes occur in RAW food. Studies undertake by Edward Howell (lauded as the enzyme pioneer) in the 1930’s. He was particularly focused on the ability of raw food to slow chronic degenerative diseases. What we do when we cook our food is to create an environment for bad-health. Many have turned to changing their habits in order to ‘heal’ things like cancer and other diseases.

CONCLUSION

There are lessons to be learned from understanding the basic functions of enzymes. Training people to eat raw rather than cooked food may result in less need for medicines, surgeries, and even doctors.

There is plenty of research available for those interested enough to follow it through. This article is meant only as an introduction to better health and not as material from an expert in this subject.

Which Home Humidifier Is Best For You?

A home humidifier can have a positive impact on anyone who owns one. They’re know to keep the air at a comfortable moisture level, which, in turn, can affect your overall well-being. Embracing the benefits of a home humidifier is a great first step towards getting better sleep and improving your overall quality of life. Once you decide that you want a home humidifier, you need to figure out which one you’ll get the best use out of. All humidifiers provide the same general benefits but their method of deploying the comforting mist varies. The different types and sizes should also be considered when deciding the best one for your home.

In this article, we’ll be looking at three common types of home humidifiers to help you narrow down your options. Remember, regardless of whichever one you purchase, the most important thing you can do is maintain it with a regular cleaning and disinfecting routine to keep mold and bacteria from building up and spreading throughout your space. There are general cleaning practices but I strongly recommend you use the manufacturer’s instructions for best results and longer use. Without proper care, even the best humidifier can become a dangerous, bacteria-filled device that does more damage than good.

Cool Mist Humidifiers

Cool mist humidifiers are considered the best types of humidifiers. They can be used to emit their soothing vapor in larger settings and are generally safer than warm mist humidifiers. Many people compare warm and cool mist humidifiers to find that the benefits of cool mist outweighs those of warm mist humidifiers. One of those benefits is the safety factor. Since there’s no water to boil in order to create the vapor, a cool mist humidifier can be left overnight in a children’s room or near pets without worrying about having a terrible accident.

If you’re considering a cool mist humidifier, you can choose between an evaporative humidifier and an ultrasonic humidifier (I go into more detail on the ultrasonic humidifier later in the article).

Best used for: keeping large rooms comfortable, balancing moisture levels, during the day or night to keep you sleeping better throughout the night, alleviating cold symptoms and allergies.

Who can benefit: parents wanting a safer option for their family, those looking for relief during warm or dry climate, those looking for an economical option, anyone suffering from asthma or seasonal allergies, anyone looking for relief from cold symptoms.

Room Humidifier

There are many room humidifiers developed with room size in mind so you don’t have to worry about whether or not your room is too big or too small. Be advised, however, that whenever you purchase a room humidifier, the trade-offs can vary between convenience, efficiency, and noise production depending on the size. When it comes to room humidifiers, there are different built-in functions that can add to the convenience factor. You can find one with a humidistat built in to keep the moisture content in your room at optimum levels. This helps regulate the moisture content in your room without you having to think twice about it. Too much moisture can reverse the benefits of a humidifier and cause mold and mildew to grow and spread much easier, so keeping a handle on that is one of the most important things you can do with any humidifier. A timer is also common in a room humidifier but it can backfire if you forget to dry the humidifier between uses.

Best used for: nighttime use to help you sleep better throughout the night, especially smaller models; portability and traveling; dorm rooms.

Who can benefit: anyone wanting low maintenance convenience, someone who is always traveling and wants to be able to take the comfort of a humidifier with them.

Ultrasonic Humidifiers

Ultrasonic humidifiers use high-frequency sound vibrations in order to produce vapor. When comparing it to other humidifiers, these tend to be the quieter ones. Keep in mind that there’s no such thing as a completely quiet humidifier but if you’re looking for one that doesn’t keep you up with an obnoxious buzzing, this is your best choice. I mentioned earlier that this is a type of cool mist humidifier, which makes it one of the safer types to use but also more prone to bacteria build up. Without the boiling water to help kill bacteria, disinfecting ultrasonic humidifiers is an important part of maintenance. On the other hand, ultrasonic humidifiers don’t have a filter built in which helps save on filter purchases. The only downside to this is that you may notice greyish dust forming. To ease this, you can purchase an ultrasonic humidifier with a ceramic filter and use distilled water instead of tap water.

Best used for: daily use, around pets and children, anyone wanting relief from warm and dry climate, relief from cold symptoms.

Who can benefit: someone looking for a low cost, low maintenance humidifier; those looking for a quieter option; anyone who needs a safer humidifier that can be used in any room; anyone suffering from sinus conditions and dry skin.

How to Get More Referrals From Hospitals, SNF, and Physicians

HHAs cannot survive without a steady flow of patient referrals, especially in areas where there is an abundance of HHAs competing for the same few patient population.

Why is it now harder to get referrals from hospital or SNF discharge planners?

There are several good reasons why it’s harder to get referrals from discharge planners:

1. Discharge planners are bombarded by home health sales reps on a daily basis as competition for patients increases. There has been a 75% increase in the number of agencies across the US. Can you see why discharge planners from hospitals and SNFs are overwhelmed? Many hospitals have new policies prohibiting home health sales reps from calling or dropping in on their discharge planners because it’s takes up too much of their time.

2. With the explosion of home health agencies, and the rules about patient choice and freedom of choice, it is more difficult for discharge planners to make referrals to certain agencies all the time. This is especially true when most agencies have the same wording in their brochures. Nothing makes them stand out from the crowd. Nothing says why the patient should choose your agency over another agency.

3. Discharge Planner/ Case Managers (DP/CM) are under tremendous pressure to get patients out of hospitals quicker, so this makes it harder for discharge planners/case managers to discharge patients from the hospital to competent home health or home care services. The pressure makes it hard for CM/DP to interact with home health sales reps.

Solution: What is a more effective way to get more referrals from Physicians, hospitals, and Skilled Nursing Facilities?

Based on the above information, and just plain knowledge on how the system works. It just makes good sense for home health agencies and personal care agencies to start specializing in providing specific types of care, or target a certain group of patients rather than saying that “everyone” is your targeted market. The truth is that not everyone is your targeted market with so much competition out there looking for the patients. Now is the opportunity for home health and personal care agencies to generate referrals that turn into admissions by telling DP/CM, physicians, and SNF what makes you special. What problem of theirs can you solve?

Your Sales Rep. should be able to tell hospitals, SNF, physicians or their office staffs how you can solve the 30 Day Re- Admission issues that Medicare penalizes them for. If you focus on this 30-day Re-Admission problem that plagues every hospital in the country, then your agency will soar to higher success. Training staff will be the first step you take to guarantee the success of this plan. Your sales rep must be very knowledgeable about what your agency can and cannot do. There’s nothing worse than having a sales rep promising hospitals, and doctors that you can provide services that your agency is not qualified to do. If your agency cannot provide anything more than simple wound care because your nurses are not trained on wound care, then don’t take patients with major wound care needs. You would think this would be common sense, but believe me as a consultant, I have seen many agencies get into trouble by taking patient case loads they are not qualified for, or have enough nurses to provide the care.

How Is Life Review Therapy a Way to Bring Transformation?

Sharing memories take you on an adventurous journey that helps you relive the moments of past. The idea of sharing memories has now become a therapy to treat concerns such as depression, anxiety, and loneliness. Life review therapy is a way to achieve a sense of peace or empowerment about one’s life. It is often confused by the term reminiscence therapy which is slightly different from it. On one hand, people describe a memory while on the other hand people tell what that memory means to them.

This therapy may not be for everyone but helps a certain group of people to look back into their lives with a different perspective. There is no particular theme for the therapy but it usually revolves around childhood, education, friendship, parenthood, working years etc. You may be asked to bring souvenirs including music, photos, letters, possessions, or even family trees that can help you sketch your story with each minute detail and embellishment.

Life review therapy can be done for various purposes such as therapeutic, educational, and informational. Talking about therapeutic, it is useful for the people to dig deeper into their lives and discover the hidden purpose. Older adults suffering from diseases like Dementia, Alzheimer, depression, anxiety or those diagnosed with a terminal condition and are facing the pain of the loss of loved one can be benefited by this therapy. Secondly, Educational purpose; students these days are asked to talk to their parents and grandparents about their past life and experiences that have taught them various lessons in life for a better understanding. Lastly, informational purpose; sharing memories help to carry forward the family traditions and culture to the coming generations.

Life review therapy is related to ego integrity and despair. Some studies revealed that life review interventions promoted ego integrity and enhanced psychological well-being in older people. These studies showed that life review improved personal meaning, increased life satisfaction, increased self-esteem, and promote adaptation of older people. In addition, studies also revealed that life review interventions prevented despair in older people.

On the contrary, people who have had a miserable past may have ill effects of this therapy as it may bring back all the bad memories associated with one’s life and take them on to a painful trip. There is a platform that has been working for the well-being of older adults by treating them through Life review therapy which they keep conducting on a regular basis individually or in the groups. The advantage of having a group therapy is that you feel light sharing your memories and become strong after listening to other people who might have an entirely different experience. Seniors who would love to share their life experience can do that as well. Because each person has got a story to tell that can empower not only himself but also the person listening to it.

LifeBio is a platform that captures life stories and helps people publish biographies using an online system and journals. Reminiscence therapy is one way they help older adults to stay happy in their life.

An Easy Introduction to Salt Therapy

It is no question that the pharmacy industry grows every day. Any symptom you are feeling can easily be treated with a pill or a daily dose of medicine. It’s very easy to get caught up in how easily problems we have with our bodies can go away. But taking pills or medicine sometimes is not the best option. With reoccurring illnesses or problems in the body, by taking the same drug one too many times, your body can build an immunity to it, requiring larger doses to have an effect. Natural treatments have been becoming popular once again because they can be done safely and effectively at home, and with fewer risks.

A well-known natural treatment is salt therapy. Salt therapy has been around as early as the twelfth century. This natural and non-invasive treatment involves inhaling microscopic salt particles, targeted at cleansing the respiratory system. The salt’s negatively charged ions (which can be found in places like the beach or waterfalls) are found to reduce the amount of mucus and inflammation in the lungs. This effect improves respiratory conditions such as asthma, allergies, bronchitis, sinus infections, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and many more. By liquefying the mucus and the inflammation going down, the airways become more cleared for the patient. It is also easier to cough and expel what is unwanted out of the lungs.

Salt therapy does more than just cleansing the respiratory system. According to one study published on PubMed, “It inhibits the growth of bacteria and, in some case, kills them. Phagocyte activity is also increased. It has beneficial effect on the well-being of the patients, and a relaxation effect on the central nervous system. It can prevent, or at least decrease the frequency of the respiratory tract inflammations. It produces better lung function parameters, diminishes bronchial hyperreactivity, which is the sign of decreasing inflammation.” By killing the growth of the bacteria, it’s much more difficult for it to spread and infect the body. Due to this, you will find yourself getting fewer colds and infections because of how strong your body has become. Overall, these additional bonuses of salt therapy will only continue improving your quality of life.

Since salt therapy is drug-free, it makes it a wonderful option for children, especially fussy ones. They won’t even notice the salt particles they’re breathing in because they’re so minuscule, making it extremely easy to have them do this treatment. There have also been studies taken on children with asthma and the effects of salt therapy on them. PubMed concluded that “The treatment group showed a statistical improvement in most parameters of quality of life questionnaires.” and “Our pilot study suggests that salt room with halo generator, may have some beneficial effects in mild asthmatic children.” More and more studies show the positive influence and improved quality of life salt therapy had on the patients. Beside recent studies, salt therapy has been used for centuries as folk medicine. Europe has many salt sanatoriums, the treatments being covered by the health ministry in some of the European countries.

Salt therapy can do a lot for you and can also be used easily at home. This treatment isn’t limited to only those who are affected by a respiratory illness. It can help you from preventing many different illnesses before they affect you by strengthening your immunity. It’s safe, it’s affordable, and it doesn’t come with any potential side effects like most prescription drugs do. Go natural and try salt therapy today!

Healthy Living – The Best Tips For Getting Through A Cold

No one likes being ill. But yet every year, there is a good chance you will catch at least one cold or flu bug. Double this if you have children. When you are down and out with a cold, what do you find happens to your diet and fitness plan? Do you abandon ship, telling yourself you will start-up again once you are feeling better? If that is the case, you may want to rethink your strategy to some degree. While you obviously are not going to hit the gym and crash through some personal best records, this does not mean you have to become a junk-food eating sloth on the couch either. Here are some healthy ideas to keep in mind…

1. Drink Plenty Of Water. First, this tip will work double time because not only will it help you stay healthy, but it may just help you get past your cold as well. You should aim to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water even while sick. If you are struggling to get your water intake in, note you can also make your fluid intake from broth-based soups, or teas. Some people find chicken soup, for instance, is the perfect fluid to take in while they are unwell.

2. Get Up And Walk – If It’s Shoulders And Above. The golden rule for activity while ill is if it is above your shoulders, you are free to do any activity you choose. If it is below your shoulders, however, then you will want to rest up for the time being.

Head colds will not preclude you from participating in light to moderate intensity activity. You probably do not want to do anything super intense because that will place a strain on your CNS and in turn, make it harder to recover, but do get up and get moving. The increase in blood circulation can be good for delivering nutrients to all your bodily tissues and this can also help to increase your energy level at a time you may otherwise be feeling sluggish.

3. Eat Sufficient Protein. It is normal to experience some changes in your appetite while you are not feeling so well. What you always want to make sure you are doing is eating sufficient lean protein. You want to get those amino acids in as this is what will help to preserve your lean muscle mass tissue and prevent the loss of muscle while ill.

If you are only unwell for a day or two it probably will not matter too much. But if you are ill for a week or longer and are not eating enough protein, this could start to impact you. Focus on lean sources of quality protein such as…

  • chicken,
  • steak,
  • eggs, and
